Mercury Thermometer Description and Usage
A mercury thermometer is a traditional device used to measure body temperature. It consists of a thin glass tube containing a small amount of mercury. As the temperature rises, the mercury expands and rises along a numbered scale indicating the temperature.
How to Use a Mercury Thermometer:
1. Clean the Thermometer: Wash it with cold water and soap or wipe it with an alcohol swab, then dry it thoroughly.
2. Shake the Thermometer: Hold the thermometer by the end opposite the mercury bulb and gently shake it to bring the mercury level down below 35°C (95°F).
3. Select the Measurement Site:
- Oral: Place the thermometer under the tongue and close the mouth gently.
- Axillary (underarm): Place the thermometer in the center of the armpit and press the arm against the body.
- Rectal: Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the tip of the thermometer and gently insert it into the rectum for infants or young children.
4. Wait for the Required Time: Leave the thermometer in place for 3-5 minutes for oral or axillary measurements, and for 1 minute for rectal measurements.
5. Read the Temperature: Remove the thermometer and read the temperature at the level of the mercury column.
6. Clean the Thermometer: After use, clean the thermometer with water and soap or an alcohol swab.
Safety Precautions:
- Handle with care to avoid breaking the glass and releasing the toxic mercury.
- Store the thermometer out of reach of children and in a cool, dry place.
